So full of rage
So full of hate
from an academic standpoint Fangirls are sadomasochistic little freaks. I am well aware that a fangirl (by definition) choses to remain ignorant of the scholarship surrounding her chosen fandom in order to retain the sense of mystery (and thus allure) of the character, story, 'ship. whatever.
if they had an inkling that what Yaoi men represent is actually a straight relationship then they wouldn't take such cheap thrills from hurt-comfort. it's downright disturbing that they find such down-and-out depressing Yaois so fulfilling; especially when analysis suggests that Yaois are the exploration of relationship-emancipation. To have Yaoi squandering in the ultra-traditional, love-hate-hurt-comfort-love-of-a-good-man(woman) wasteland cuts the legs out from under any message of equality in love (and between the sexes) that the Yaoi may in fact be communicating.
And from an empathic POV, why do they insist on torturing a character or a fandom half to death for the visceral thrill of building that character back. doesn't that character represent a human being?! don't they realize that they are torturing people?! that in real life they wouldn't get turned on by the senseless cruelty they inflict on their Yaoi characters? that they'd instead call the police...
Of course not. that is why fangirls remain. they have no idea that their rabid fanishness is not about free-love, or gay rights. it's about keeping the romantically submissive downtroaden and therefore a passive erotic object.
